What makes Harry Potter so great?

Don't get me wrong, I love the series. But what exactly makes it so great? The idea is a bit odd, witches, wizards, trolls and goblins. The first book, in my opinion, was uninteresting. But somehow I came back for more, as did many others. So what was it that made them so interesting?
