Why do people call another universe a "dimension" when they're not the same thing?

Simple. Parallel universes theoretically exist in these other dimensions. Think of a dimension as a direction. There are universes in all of these directions. Look up M theory. I can probably explain much better than I. Better yet look up Naked science episode on parallel universes. It has many scientists explaining and giving good analogies. Really fascinating stuff.
